[it's not the first time this kind of thing has happened to him, and he doesn't know if that makes it easier or harder to swallow. the consequences of this time around were far less disastrous, at least; harrow's peace of mind and his friendship with molly probably being the only real casualties. but it hits a little too close, with the sting of feeling like he should better than that by now.

more than anything, it's an aching reminder of when he was a little kid, before ares and caleb came along. back when he thought that hardship was only an early phase in his life, and that he'd one day get to be happy like anyone else—not realizing that the nightmare was about to get so much worse, and that it would continue for the rest of his life.]
